Morgan Center Update

Every day the Morgan Center renovation is nearer completion. The Mezzanine supports are in place and the flooring substrate is coming next. The new 1,800-square-foot banquet kitchen facility for the Morgan Center, just to the south of the main building, is taking shape. The kitchen foundation has been poured, studs and framework are in place, and the major plumbing and electrical conduits have been incorporated. The next major step in the project is the installation of the elevator in the main building. The $3.5 million project is scheduled for completion in September, and conferences have been scheduled for mid month.

When completed, the newly transformed facility will have 4,900 square feet of conference space on the main level and 1600 square feet on the mezzanine. Open and spacious, the lower level can accommodate groups of 400 people; 120 more, on the upper level Mezzanine. For more information about the Morgan Center for conferences, weddings or special events, contact the Jekyll Island Club Hotel Sales Department at 912-635-2600, extension 1070, or email sales@jekyllclub.com.

Winner of “Free Dinner for Two” Drawing – Laura Adams Weaver

Each quarter the Jekyll Island Club Hotel has a drawing for a free Dinner for Two. Patrons of the Grand Dining Room or Courtyard at Crane restaurant enter the drawing by completing comment cards and leaving them with their servers. The winner of the final drawing this time is Laura Adams Weaver of Winterville, Georgia. She has her choice of dinner for two at either of the restaurants. Congratulations, Ms Weaver!

“This is exciting! When we were there last, we had amazing food and wonderful service. We enjoy having dinner at the hotel and look forward to seeing you soon,” said Ms. Weaver when she received the good news.

The elegant Grand Dining Room continues to be the scene of social gatherings and gourmet experiences. Beautifully restored in the Victorian mode, the room is dominated by Ionic columns and expansive views of the Jekyll River. By night, the glow of candlelight and piano music create an atmosphere of romance and anticipation of the gourmet meal to come.

The Courtyard at Crane Cottage, an alfresco restaurant, is the enchanting setting for a casual, sophisticated dining experience. Located in the center courtyard and loggia of the historic Crane Cottage, the setting suggests an Italian Renaissance villa. Guests enjoy a menu reminiscent of the northern California wine country.

Chaine des Rotisseurs Has Clambake at Jekyll Island Club Hotel Beach Pavilion

The Chaine des Rotisseurs claims to be the world’s oldest international gastronomic society, founded in Paris in 1248. The organization devotes itself to “preserving the camaraderie and pleasures of the table and promotes excellence in all areas of the hospitality arts.” This ancient society was revived in 1950 and is enjoyed in 70 plus countries with 150 chapters in the United States. Chaine members enjoy themselves!

The local chapter of Chaine plans imaginative culinary events for their membership, and there is prestige associated with being selected to host one of their gatherings. Recently, Chaine chose to have a “Clambake on the Beach” at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel’s Beach Pavilion, and it was a singular success according to one member whose letter is quoted below.

“Clambake on the Beach”

Talk about a Clambake………this was about as good as it gets!

Sunday, May 16, 31 members and guests traveled down Highway 17 to Jekyll Island for a beautiful afternoon and evening of fun and frolic at the Jekyll Island Beach Club. General Manager Kevin Runner left no stone unturned in orchestrating a most memorable event.

Unlike 1992, we (the member volunteers) didn’t have to dig the pit, haul in the stones, build the fire at 10:00a.m., unload the seaweed and lobsters, set up the tables and put up the tent…..etc. Whew! Lucky us.

Starting with a Bocce Ball contest on hard sand, just before the tide rolled in, we followed the “official” rules from Wikipedia, didn’t consume too much beer, and learned all the tricks from John Knight and Rick Salvatore, prior champions of regional renown! Thanks to all for good sportsmanship and good cheer.

New England Clam “Chowdah” and icy cold Oysters on the half shell were served on the beach between sets and replenished as guests moved up to the Pavilion. What a treat! The two pound “Novey” lobsters Kevin had flown in from Canada on Friday were, by far, the best ever. Paired with potatoes, sausage, Little Necks and steamers, onions and carrots, all layered between 60 pounds of “Ascophyllum nodosum” was very impressive as well as delicious. Of course, all of this came with plenty of Chardonnay choices from our cellar: Val de Sil, Rombauer, River Road, Trefethern and E L Novellero to wash it all down.

A Jekyll Island Club dessert specialty, Strawberry Shortcake with Edy’s Grand Double Vanilla, was a perfect ending, as the tide rose and beautiful moonlight “Showed Us the Way to Go Home.”

Winner of Bed and Breakfast Drawing – Robert Nordan

The winner of the recent Jekyll Island Club Hotel drawing for the Bed and Breakfast Package is Robert Nordan of Bolingbroke, Georgia! Congratulations to Mr. Nordan.

“Awesome! Thanks so much,” said Mr. Nordan when he was informed of his good fortune. “Although I have never stayed at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, I have visited and looked around, but that is the extent of it. My wife is a photographer and loves taking pictures of the Club, the many birds on the island, and the beautiful sunsets. We’ve been to the island a number of times to ride bikes and walk the beach. My wife has wanted to stay at the Hotel for a while now…so, I entered hoping my name would be picked. What a pleasant surprise when you told me I had indeed. This just made my day!”

You, too, might be a winner of the Bed and Breakfast Drawing.
